السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Approximately six thousand years ago, Ibrahim عليه السلام (Abraham) traveled thousands of miles with his wife Hajar (Hagar) and their infant son Isma’il عليه السلام (Ishmael). He left them in a lonely, barren valley without any life supporting signs, to fulfill the wish of Allah (God).
The meager provisions, which Ibrahim عليه السلام (Abraham) had left for them, before returning to Misr (Egypt), ended soon.
Little Isma’il عليه السلام (Ishmael) became thirsty but there was not a single drop of water to drink. Hajar (Hagar) put her infant son down, and began looking for water. She ran around frantically in search of water, while praying to Allah (God) for help.
Allah (God) caused a miracle- a spring gushed forth beneath the feet of Isma’il عليه السلام (Ishmael).
When Hajar (Hagar) returned to her son, she was pleasantly surprised on seeing the spring of water. But she could not see precious water in that desolate terrain go waste. She desperately tried to hold the precious water with her scorched arms, saying Zam Zam, meaning ‘Stop, Stop’.
That little spring of water created by Allah (God) to quench the thirst of little Isma’il عليه السلام (Ishmael), changed the course of the history of mankind. That little spring is remembered as Zamzam.
Caravans traveling from Yaman (Yemen) to Sham (Syria, Iraq) that never stopped in that barren valley, began to stop there because of water. Nomadic Arab tribes began to settle down there. Soon, a city mushroomed around Zamzam. We now know the city as Makkah. Its first residents were Hajar (Hagar) and her infant son Isma’il A (Ishmael).
Ibrahim عليه السلام (Abraham), always remembered Hajar (Hagar) and Isma’il عليه السلام (Ishmael) while he was living with his first wife Sarah in Misr (Egypt). He was always concerned about them. He thanked Allah (God) when he visited the valley of Makkah and found his family safe.
Later, he constructed the Ka’bah there with the help of his son Isma’il عليه السلام (Ishmael), who had grown up. Rest is history. More than one billion Muslims face the Ka’bah five times every day to offer
Salah (Prayers). Zamzam continues to flow, providing blessings and comforts to the millions of Hajj pilgrims for thousands of years. Zamzam is one of the beacons of Allah (God).
