Understanding Islamic 'Ibadah (Acts of Worship)
Iqamah [Second call for Salah (Prayer)] (الإقامة )
Iqamah is the second call for Salah (Prayer). Method and the words for Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) were also divinely inspired.
Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) is said just before the beginning of each Fard Salah (Obligatory Prayer). Mu’adh-dhin (Caller of Adhan) or any other person among the people who have gathered in the Masjid (Mosque) for Salah (Prayer) can call Iqamah (Second call for Prayer).
Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) is said when everyone is standing in organized rows for offering Salah (Prayer) in a group. Usually the person standing behind the Imam (Leader) for the Salah (Prayer) recites Iqamah (Second call for Prayer).
Unlike Adhan (Call for Prayer), the person reciting Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) keeps his hands on his sides and does not raise his hands nor does he put the tips of his index fingers in his ears.
Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) is not said as loudly as the Adhan (Call for Prayer), because in this case the intended audience has already reached the Masjid (Mosque) and most of them are standing in rows waiting for Salah (Prayer) to begin.
Still, Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) is said loudly enough so that everyone in the Masjid (Mosque) may hear it.
Words of Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) (ألفاظ الإقامة )
Words for Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) are very similar to those of Adhan (Call for Prayer).
An additional phrase Qad Qamatis-Salat (Prayer is ready) is repeated twice after reciting Haiyya ‘Alal-Falah (Come to your good).
Words of Iqamah (Second call for Prayer) are pronounced once except Allahu Akbar and Qad Qamatis Salah.
Narrated Abu Qilabah: Anas رضي الله عنه said, "Bilal رضي الله عنه was ordered to pronounce the wording of Adhan twice and of Iqamah once only." The sub narrator Isma'li said, "I mentioned that to Ayyub and he added (to that), "Except Iqamah (i.e. Qad-Qamatis-Salat which should be said twice)."
